CHINA: THE NEW CENTURY GLOBAL CENTRE

Move aside Dubai. China now has what is billed as the world's largest building. Southwest China is now home to what Chinese officials are calling "the largest building in the world". It is 100 meters high, 500 meters long and 400 meters wide, with a floor space of 1.7 million square meters, making it the world's biggest building measured by floor space. It is reportedly big enough to open 3 Pentagons inside it. The building has a water park, five-star hotels, an ice-skating rink and a beach, complete with artificial sea breezes and sunsets. It will also house offices, conference rooms, a university complex, two commercial centres, hotels, an IMAX cinema, a "Mediterranean village", a pirate ship and skating rink. Up to 6,000 visitors at a time will be able to sunbathe, play in a wave pool, sip cocktails or feast on seafood. A 150-meter-by-40-meter LED screen will rise above a section of water with videos of an ocean horizon.
The New Century project is a sign that China’s growth has spread from the country’s more prosperous eastern and southern regions to the west, where wages are lower and the central government has encouraged development with subsidies and tax breaks. With its booming economy, China has become home to some of the largest and tallest buildings in the world.
However, the first wave of visitors showed a mixed response. Some of them commented that the building lacks creativity while others have remarked that it will become the new landmark of Chengdu. Whatever may be the reaction, it remains a fact that this building is another feather in their now illustrious and almost full cap.
